Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick briefly commented on the possibility of updating the new mid-gen console, stating that updated PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles will “probably” be released.
“It probably will,” Zelnik said. Game industry., while adding that the upgraded previous-generation consoles “didn’t have much of a business impact” and that Take-Two would continue to support the latest generation of hardware. A new Nintendo console is rumored to be released next year, Zelnick says the company will continue to support the console as well. “Yes, I think we will continue to support him,” he said.
The current generation of console gaming is over two years old since the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 were introduced in November 2020. By comparison, the Xbox One underwent a mid-gen update in the form of the Xbox One X in 2017, four years after its launch, while the PS4 Pro was released three years after the PS4’s launch.
Both consoles focused on delivering natural 4K gameplay, and saw increases in performance and quality modes that prioritized frame rate or resolution, respectively. In most cases, it was either one or the other, and current generation consoles also began to offer more limited graphical options for newer games. Games like Gotham Knights can only be played at 4K and 30fps on the console, with Redfall’s 60fps mode only coming in a future update.
There are a number of reasons why fewer new console games are able to reach the 4K 60fps benchmark, and as Digital Foundry explained, the return of 30fps games is imminent in the current generation of consoles. It’s worth noting that Sony filed a patent for the new drive in April, fueling rumors that a PS5 with a removable drive is in the works.
As for Take-Two, it expects fiscal 2025 to be a very profitable one, as the company assumed GTA 6 would come out next year and help it make an absurd amount of money.
